Our family story

Joseph Hoffman was born September 1832 in North Carolina.  His father was Ben Hoffman.  Fannie Holland was born January 1833 in North Carolina.  On April 12, 1852 in Dallas, North Carolina, Isaac Hoffman married Joseph and Fannie at James Rhyne’s house.  The witnesses were James Rhyne and William Hoffman.

 

Joseph and Fannie had five children.  Below are the names of the children.

  • James Richard Hoffman - 2/13/1853 - 1/20/1935
  • Sarah C. Hoffman - 12/29/1856 - 10/3/1934
  • George Washington Hoffman - 11/18/1858 - 2/10/1914
  • Nancy C. Hoffman - Dec 1860 - 8/6/1935
  • Alice Hoffman - 11/10/1865 - 5/2/1885

 

1870 census – Race was Mulatto.  Joseph (age 36) and Fannie (age 35) lived on a farm in Dallas, North Carolina with their five children.  The children’s names were James (age 15), Sarah (age 12), George (age 11), Nancy (age 9), and Alice (age 5).  In addition, Nannie Holland (age 16) was living with them.  Joseph, James, and George farmed the land and Fannie kept house.  Joseph and Fannie can not read or write.  James, Sarah, George, and Nancy attended school.

 

The 1870 census asked the following:

  • Value of your real estate - $400
  • Value of your personal estate - $400

 

On November 22, 1876, Joseph leased land to Distill Spirits from D.W. Rhyne.  He partner was John D. Smith.

 

1880 census – Race was Mulatto.  Joseph (age 48,) was a Distiller of Spirits.  Fannie (age 44) kept house.  Alice (age 16) lived with her parents.

 

On July 6, 1891 Joseph and Fannie Hoffman sold land for $15.00 to School District #13 for the Colored race (taken from deed).  They signed the legal documents with an “X”.

 

1900 census - Race was Black.  Joseph (age 68) and Fannie (age 67) had been married for 52 years.  This census asked how many children you have.  Fannie stated she had three living children and she birthed five.  Sometime between 1880 and 1900 census Sarah and Alice died.  They owned their home.  There was no mortgage on their home.  They lived next door to their son George (age 41) and his family.

 

Joseph died October 6, 1901 and Fannie died in 1903.  Both are buried in the cemetery located in the back of First Baptist Church, Dallas, North Carolina.
